Andrew Carter
Andrew Carter lives and works in London. He studied Fine Art Painting at Central School of Art and an MA in printmaking at Central School of Art. He teaches painting, drawing and printmaking alongside developing his own work as an artist.
In recent work he has focused his attention on exploring the link between subjects found in the landscape and the geometric arrangement of pattern, shape and colour. Whilst there is diversity in the places his subjects are found there is a commitment to a specific process of arrangement and cutting relief blocks. All of the work starts with something seen outside, between forms, or through windows and then, through a process of elimination and selection he tries to arrive at an image that transcends the commonplace. Drawings are made and images are cut in reverse before printing by hand.
He has worked in group studios in London, having co-founded Cubitt Artists in the early 1990’s. and been a part of Gasworks studio. He has taken part in many group shows and works has been selected for The Royal Academy Summer show four times. Work is held in the Victoria and Albert museum and Yale university as well as many private collections. He has done residencies in Braunschweig, Germany and Namibia, with the Triangle Arts Trust.
Andrew works from his studio in East Dulwich and at the Artichoke Print studio in Brixton. Whilst working in London he draws from fragments of the landscape in Scotland, North Yorkshire, Cornwall, Dorset and abroad finding links with urban spaces nearer to home.
