Gail Brodholt & Louise Davies | Exhibition
Our exhibition in June is ‘London and Beyond’; a joint show featuring work by Gail Brodholt and Louise Davies, London based printers who share a studio together. They are interested in capturing atmosphere and exploring how the landscape, either rural or urban, forms a backdrop to our lives. Both artists have an expert eye for composition and colour but take very different approaches to printmaking. This exhibition is a great opportunity to see their work together and explore their complimentary yet contrasting styles.
Gail Brodholt
Gail Brodholt will be exhibiting her linocut prints of contemporary urban landscape. Her work is concerned with journeys, both actual and temporal, providing an outsider’s narrative on present day London which is tinged with certain nostalgia for the railways and tube trains. Much of her work depicts the London transport network and the journeys made across the city on tubes and trains. We are delighted that Gail has produced this new print, Queen of The Suburbs, especially for the exhibition – local people will of course recognise the station as Ealing Common.
Gail Brodholt trained at the School of Fine Art, Kingston University, London and is a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers. Gail has exhibited widely and her work can be seen in various galleries in London and throughout the UK.
Louise Davies
Louise Davies prints are primarily concerned with the landscape. Some are based on childhood memories, reflecting on the countryside and coast of the west of England. She has a strong use of colour combined with an individual and sensitive line drawing which she uses to create a visual language for her prints. Her evocative prints of urban rural scenes combine a sensitive approach to colour with a gestural, looser application of paint. Etched line and texture are introduced to roughly define architectural and natural forms.
Louise Davies graduated with a Fine Art Degree from St Martins and then completed an M.A. in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art. She is a member of the Royal Society of Painter and Printmakers and was awarded the Curwen Print Prize for 2012. Her work is permanently on display in several galleries.
The exhibition ‘London and Beyond’ opens on Friday 5th June and runs until Sunday 5th July 2015 at For Arts Sake gallery. A private viewing will be held on Thursday 4th June providing an opportunity to meet both artists.
